One day I was an idiot and I sold my Minilogue OG, offensively cheap, because it did not fit in a backpack and I wanted to be able to jam anywhere. Yup that was my reason. Like, as if I jammed in a plane 99% of the time. Then I woke up from being dumb and got so angry. 2 years later I found a music store which had broken relations with Korg and was liquidating their products. The ML was 25 USD cheaper than the price at which I had sold my first one. So in the end I earned $25 and got my used synth replaced by a new one. Humbling. The synth gods gave me a second chance.

    ( approx. 1400$ )

  • @legitt6093
    @legitt6093 3 дня назад +2

    I guessed:
    1. Minilogue (the original one) - I was really expecting you'd say you prefer the XD, but I guessed the original as you've featured it a lot during the years.
    2. Digitakt (the original one) - Also featured a lot, but the Pulsar took me by surprise :)
    3. OP1 (the original one) - I remember you liked it a lot, though I was unsure how you felt about the field.
    4. Hydrasynth (keyboard) - Honestly, I was clueless and thought you'd say Minifreak, but when you gave the hint .. I even said it out loud :)
    5. Polybrute12 - I didn't knew you had the original one :))

    1. Waldorf Iridium (sold my Hydrasynth to get it and it's a lot more powerful than the Hydrasynth). Without question, the Iridium is untouchable in synthesis. It can do things no other synthesizer can come close too.
    2. Elektron RYTM MKII (Design drums from the ground up and its unbeatable sequencer).
    3. Elektron Digitone II (Korg Opsix sounds better and the polyphony on the Opsix is insane but its only monotimbral).
    4. Sequential Pro-3 (it has so much presence).
    5. Elektron Octatrak (it can just do so much... but man, the Digitakt MKII is now in stereo as well and it has 16 tracks... close call).
Honorable mentions: Tasty Chips GR-Mega (the king of granular synthesis), Korg Wavestate,

    • @DankePlace
      @DankePlace 3 дня назад +1

Iridium is a whole new level of synthesizer.
Someone was arguing with me in another thread that because I said the Iridium runs rings around the PEAK, all because the OP posted that the Summit was the best value poly in the world, which it is not.
Somehow this person could not understand simply that the Summit/PEAK isn't as good as some say.
Recently bought a Digitone keys and not fond of the workflow.
Just got a bnib Pro 3 from warranty today, I am in 2 minds whether I should keep it, I am looking at swapping for an Iridium Core of Osmose.
I might just keep it though as am in no hurry for either other synths.
Sold the Wavestate due to workflow too, I prefer much better the Iridium Core, it speaks to me and is intuitive.

    • @ErwinSchrodinger64
      @ErwinSchrodinger64 День назад

@@DankePlace The Iridium’s capability of running 5 different types of synthesis engines and being able to utilize any of those three simultaneously across 3 oscillators is just insane. Its effects are really good and modulation matrix a wall of vast complexity. What’s even crazier is that it’s so intuitive to use. Nothing can touch it in terms of hardware. You want to creat anything cinematic or new in sound… it’s the hardware you need.

Well, we overlap by one. (Hydrasynth, in my case Explorer.) I would say my other four must keeps are
Beetlecrab Tempera -- absolutely incredible granular.
Beetlecrab Vector -- Vector synthesizer that is just a joy to play around with and tweak. And the display is hypnotic.
Dreadbox Typhon -- Fun and powerful analog mono-synth.
1010 Nanobox Tangerine -- simple but capable sampler. I've used it to sample many of the simpler but nice patches from my Hydrasynth to make room for yet more patches. Also has a couple really nice presets such as their grand piano.
Honorable mention (not a synthesizer per se) -- Medeli AKX 61 Arranger keyboard. Really nice set of sounds, capable of up to three timbres plus a bass. When I was in church band, this was my go to.

What synths you like and wouldn't sell is a personal thing. I may have a completely different opinion. It depends on a few factors what synths you consider good. One of the factors are the presets, which is sad - means people don't design their own sounds. So some synths seem better for one genre, and worse for another, because of the presets available. The synth's workflow/interface can be better for making some sounds and worse for making some other sounds. Since I like to design my own sounds or tweak others' sounds, to me most synths seem relatively same-ish because they generally have everything from 3 or more oscillators to 3-4 envelopes, 3-4 LFOs, plenty of modulations nowadays. You can do every kind of music with every modern synth, you just have to know how. Cheers! 😉😆

Got 3 right: Minilogue was very obvious, OP-1 Field, and the Hydrasynth (which I mistakenly also had for the big polysynth, should have taken notes that I already had used the option 😅). The same feeling for the OP-1 you have, I have for the OP-XY. Would not quickly recommend it because it is far too expensive. But it is such a joyful device for me.

I don't see myself getting rid of my Minilogue either, though I have the XD version. Wish it had the two filter options of the original, though.
Of the rest of my synths, the other four would probably be my MS-20 mini, Moog Minitaur, Subharmonicon and Opsix Module.
If a Niftycase and all its modules counted as one, I could see it replacing the Subharmonicon. I also still have a fondness for my Monologue, which I guess would be my sixth pick.
Of yours, I only got the obvious one 😂

I was not surprised at all by the hydrasynth and the polybrute. I thought maybe the Perkons drum machine.
my set up is my favorite so far. I only have 4 synths. Arturia Microfreak, ASM Hydrasynth Explorer, Roland SH-4d, Korg Drumlogue. each one aside from sounding good has to be fun to play. The Microfreak and Hydrasynth are for sound design. the work flow makes so much sense. And the hydrasynth is great for generative sounds. The Drumlogue and SH-4d are the rhythm section. they may have limitations on what is possible but they do what they need to very well and they're hella fun to play with.

Well ... I got the minilogue, op-1, and polybrute right. None of your choices are what I'd pick but I already knew that! The op-1 is neat but you really have to be okay with the tape system and I just ... my brain hates it.
    I'd probably go:
-Minifreak. I just like it best out of the entry-level synths.
-SP404mk2. Great drum machine, great effects, super flexible.
    -Digitone 2. It's perfect.
-Opsix. By far my favorite digital synth.
-... Proooobably the Prophet 10. I don't own it though, I've never felt like I've needed or wanted a big poly monster for the $$$.
I could get rid of every physical synthesizer I have but the digitone 2 and sp404 and feel pretty good about my synth tones though. [... I mostly already have.]

Only 3 right… the Korg (duh), the Hydrasynth, and the Polybrute. It’s easy to tell when you love a synth, you can tell from the videos :-)
I own the polybrute and the hydrasynth, and these synths just BEG you to dive in and play them. For hours. And hours….. and…. (You get the idea)
Instead of an OP-1, (too complicated for me) I like the simplicity of the Novation circuit tracks. For drums, the mc-707 from Roland offers so many sounds…that’s my pick!
Great (and fun!) video… keep on!

I got 3 right the korg minilogue - it just had to be as you have always said how you love it, also the ASM hydrasynth, this would also be my choice of digital synth as you say the korgs are great just not up to the build quality and who would not choose the arturia polybrute 12 (unless could afford the moog one), surprised about the others but the drum machine is more of a modular synth so makes sense.

I had mine for awhile, couldn't click with it. Have the Line Module too. I was going to sell it, and it just got discontinued... but as is the way before selling with it I decided to take it with me on the train and try and get into it. And I did, and really enjoyed building a track on it and still I wasn't sure. Then I tried the tape loop repeat function and it made some really interesting and different versions of the track I was working on, that I then incorporated into the track. So in that way, it's uniquely inspiring. I'll keep it. Plus it's handy having a tiny BLE keyboard, otherwise i'd need a Wavy Instruments Monkey.

Still didn't find a worthy replacement or something I liked as much as it or have developed a sentimental attachment to. My two polys are the Pro-800 and the Deepmind 12. My digital is the Opsix. I'd only sell the Opsix if I got a Hydra, but that would depend on getting more space. And my rompler/stage keyboard is a Yamaha CK61. That's the board I'm more fond of and try to create synth sounds with. It pairs nicely with the Pro-800 as it has an audio input and an effects processor, or with the Opsix as a controller and audio interface.

Well I only have about 5 synths, so I'll list them starting at my favorite...Yamaha AN200 ( classic and still my favorite), then, a tie at second place... Polyend Synth and Circuit Tracks, then MicroFreak, not really a synth but the Zoom Multi Stomp MS-50g, and, last and suppose it is in fact my least used and most expensive...Native Instruments Maschine Plus. Honestly though, I don't think I'd get rid of any of these, but I also don't feel like I need to buy anything new. I'm very set, and if I get bored or stuck I'll probably go back to the Maschine Plus for inspiration. Oh, and I forgot a Roland E-4 Vocal Synth... another item I'm going to hang on to for occasional inspiration.

Had to sell off some higher end stuff to pay bills. What remains is a random but pleasing assortment - Roland SP404 MKII, Roland JD-XI, Drum Brute Impact, Casio SK5….and is the OG Omnichord considered a synth? OK, that’s 5. That’s all I have! And I will NEVER sell my 1974 Stratocaster and Guild D50. Saving up,for a Hydrasynth Explorer or Minilogue now.

Only five? (1) Andromeda, does everything you would ever want from an analog, with its own unique party tricks. (2) Microwave 2. serendipitous abrasive weirdness, more versatile than MW1. (3) Kurzweil K-2661, always something useful and inspiring after 15 years. (4) EMU E6400/E5000, tasty drums. (5) DSI Tempest polysynth and drumsynth, Rytm and Alpha Base would be left behind if there was a fire. But would also sell a kidney to keep MKS-80, SH-5, Evolver, Mono/Poly, ATC-1.

Guessed 3 out of the 5, though I did count the original Polybrute in the list. OP-1 was somewhat of a "shocker", and the Pulsar 23 a little on the edge for my taste (especially in the "drum" category). My 5 = Deluge, Polybrute, Matriarch, Vermona Perfourmer MKii and Rev 2. Yet, I do have many more which I would not part with (System 8, Quadrantid and so on).

Pick 3? I'm straight to the comment section! Haha. BUT... I agree. Can it do everything? No. It gets written off because it's not a fully detailed sequencer. But as both a take anywhere inspiration machine for a keyboard focussed player, or a guitar player or vocalist (check out Novak the Enjoyer!) it can't be beat. Plus as a studio tool, it's useful because I find it can midi merge multiple BLE and hardware midi boxes all at once. Hope it gets more updates, and the inability for most of the sequencers to have notes outside of the 2 octave range without another pass, is limiting for me. But the audio loop merge workflow is pretty unique. Will never sell mine. Plus via it's USB-C port when traveling it can recharge my coffee machine 🤣

    • @darwiniandude
      @darwiniandude 3 дня назад

Oh, my Deluge arrives today. I think the Deluge will work battery powered over USB midi to the OP-1 Field with the Field as the midi host. This should be a killer combo, also portable. I wonder Bo if you have kept your Deluge? I never jumped in originally because of the LED display, but with all the software updates, open source updates, and the OLED display, I couldn't stay away any longer.

    1. Shoot - Arturia synth, I think?
    2. Digitakt 2?
    3. OP1 Field?
    4. Shoot. Iridium? - Actually, probably the Hydrasynth
    5. Don’t know… again, an Arturia, or maybe the Moog Matriarch or Moog Muse
    Five I’d never sell:
    1. Digitakt 2
    2. Moog Matriarch
    3. Empress Zoia
    4. Digitone (unless I get the DN 2 and it’s got the *exact* same delay engine)
    5. I love my Novation Summit but I’ve been wondering about selling it and getting the Peak…

    Minilogue XD
    Maschine+
    Pulsar 23
    Digitakt
    NTS-1
EDIT: so one and a half right. I almost put the Polybrute but second guessed myself. The most surprising one for me was the hydrasynth, I feel like I don’t see that one come out very often in your vids. Is it one that’s better for making tracks than demoing other gear with it?

I guessed the Minilogue and the Hydrasynth. There isn't much wrong in the OP-1 field except the price. Basically it should be around the 600-700 euro mark. But definitely not something I would buy, not my cup of tea. I have an SY77, Montage 6 (original), MODX+6, a Roland GAIA2, a TR-8S, and an SP-404MKII (also a digital piano that I would never sell, but won't count here). I think I would never sell Montage, GAIA2 and SY77.

Not even going to guess your keepers because we clearly have different tastes.
    1. Roland Integra 7. All of the best of Roland history in one box. If you don’t like that, you can make new sounds.
    2. Kurzweil PC4-7. The VAST engine gives you sample playback, VA, FM and a novel interface.
    3. Akai MPC Key 61. Great composition tool.
    4. Akai MPC Live II. Same as above but with a speaker.
    5. Yamaha Reface DX. More approachable FM synthesis.
