When you consider all the gaudy offensive numbers put up by teams in conferences that play little to no defense these days, 27th in the nation is pretty good, esp in the SEC. ;)

No, it's not that good. A national championship calibre team should be Top 10 in both.

The ESPN stats for defenses are limited and maybe useless. BUT the sack total is important, and, again, Bama comes up short in sacks. We can't say that that's because the SEC is a power running conference because look where Florida is with sack total....

http://espn.go.com/college-football/statistics/team/_/stat/defense/sort/sacks

Obviously, Bama has a Top 3 Defense in the entire nation...all things considered. They shut down the run and (probably) have a very good 3rd Down Conversion defense.

Something we all agree that Bama is very good at--Special Teams. And the statistics bear this out. Look at their Punt Special Teams statistics...
http://espn.go.com/college-football/statistics/team/_/stat/returning/sort/puntReturnYards

So, in some cases, statistics do confirm general opinion....and in some cases, stats are deceptive.

I could see Pitt moving into the Big 10, but i don't see the Big 10 asking. they would have asked Cinncy if Kelly was sticking around.

Go Army, Beat Navy.

Which is more attractive for Basketball? The Big 10 is rising in Baskeball power as the ACC becomes a fading Big 2 basketball conference.

I think Pitt is a better basketball school than Cincy is at the moment (and in the near future. Huggy Bear was a dipshit for leaving Cincy)...

The Mid-West was pretty far West (compared to most of the population) when the Conference was founded in the 1890's.

It’s not any worse than having teams in Tucson, Phoenix or Pullman, Washington named after the Pacific Ocean.

How many teams in the ACC are actually on the coast?

Problem for basketball is that the Big East is a powerhouse now when they merged conferences.

So Pitt will have to decide...step up with the Big Boys in College Football (and step sideways to slightly down) in Basketball

or stay with the cupcakes in college football and stay in maybe the Best Top-to-bottom BBall Conference...

The Big East needs to persuade Boston College to go back to them. BC is a lost nonfactor in College Football now that they've joined the ACC. BC is a football over basketball school. The U is coming back, FSU might be back sooner than people think now that Bobby is gone...GTech has basically kicked aside BC in the second rung of the ACCC......EXIT NOW BC!!!

I agree Pitt has a big decision to make what is better the backyard brwal or Pitt vs PSU in football, the level of football will be higher. In Basketball they will more than likely win the Big 10 but not be a 1 seed, I rather see them join the Big 10 to be honest with you. It would be a HUGE boost for the Football program and might take some recruits away from thoes Kittylions in State College.

There is no way, I mean never ever, that Ohio State will let Cincinnati into the Big 10/11.

Why wouldn't they? Cincy kind of had it going on with Kelly...BCS game appearances...BCS money....maybe Cincy would turn the Big10 down:rolleyes:

I don't think Iowa State brings anything to the Big 10. That's the team I wouldn't invite. Hell, kick Iowa out and bring in Pitt and Cincy:thumbsup:

That’s it right there, especially as we get close to the post Paterno era. If the Panthers can consistently get the top recruits out of Western Pennsylvania, they will be a consistent top 10 team and contend for titles.

Yes, in basketball, the Big East was great last year, but the Big 10 does not need to take a back seat to them at all. Over the last 15 years, the Big 10 has 11 Final Four appearances, the Big East has 7.

Hey TR, thanks to Navy UCLA's going to a bowl game, and one with at least as much national exposure as USC's game :1orglaugh

Conferences should be about getting the greatest collection of schools, with regional cost efficiencies taken into account not about protecting cupcakes.

I think every ACC state has Atlantic Coastline. It's not the Pacific Coast Conference. It's the Pacific (Time Zone) Conference.

The Pacific/West part of the U.S. doesn't have as many good schools as the Midwest and East Coast have. The expansion options are limited.

The Pac 10 would be attractive for Colorado, but the Pac10 thinks they could persuade Texas to join and I really don't see Texas ever doing that or wanting to do that. Texas has no interest in any Pac10 school. They are so firmly situated and aligned with the state of Texas and the Okie/Nebraska/Texas region....truly is dumb to even consider Texas.

The Pac10 might be a bit snobbish too and look down on BYU, BSU, CSU, SDSU, Hawai'i....

I totally agree with you that it would boost Pitt and really help out the Big 10. what happens in basketball in the Big East is that they beat each other up all season long and in the Big east tourney that there is nothing left for March Madness. I rather see Pitt join the Big 10 than finish tied for 2nd in the Big East and get worse bowl games than Big 10 schools. Hell Wisconson finish in 4th in the Big 10 with the same record as Pitt and Wisc got a bowl game on the 29th with The U, Pitt gest the 26th with UNC. Joining the Big 10 would solve that problem.

:dunno: Will the gutties win or just take another beating?

I suppose I could ask the same thing about my Trojans...:weeping:

UGH, How do you overthrow a 6'10" reciever? Well looks like Army is going to lose to Navy yet again.

:dunno: Will the gutties win or just take another beating?

Hard to say. They're playing Temple and Temple pretty much sucks, but they have to travel to RFK Stadium and likely deal with very non California weather conditions.

Even though it's a shitty bowl game I'm sure Neuheisel will be focused on the importance of winning in front of an east coast audience.

And it's a nice perk for Bruin seniors, who's final act will be playing a game rather than organizing that on-field lynch mob for Pete Carroll ;)

It would take a book to explain.

Cincinnati is not part of Ohio. Yes, it is north of the Ohio River, but it really part of the South.

The rivalry between Cincinnati and the rest of Ohio goes back to pre Civil War days.

^Though I share your lack of impress with most things "South"...I can't go along with you on this. If Cincy was actually considered "South" it might be the cultural capital of the South!!!! (Florida is not part of the South anymore, thank god)

Cincy > Cleveland :yesyes:

The Bearcats may have been an athletic joke from the beginning of time until they hired Huggy Bear and now Brian Kelly. Cincy football ain't a joke anymore--if they hire Kevin Sumlin from Houston, maybe they'll be able to keep the ball rollin' in the Big Least....

It's not bad to be a school with a MAIN RIVAL (Michigan) and a Pest Rival (Cincy)...:dunno:

I like how SC has ND (Main Rival) and ucla (Pest Rival :thefinger)...the year is twice as good!!
